We are delighted to announce that our president, Professor Naseem Naqvi, has been awarded an MBE, one of the UK’s most prestigious National Honours (King’s Honour), for services to Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies.

The UK National Honours (formerly Queen’s Honours and now King’s Honours) are bestowed on individuals who have made outstanding contributions in their respective fields, elevating the UK’s international standing and putting Britain on the map. The Honour celebrates the exceptional people who go above and beyond to change the world around them for the better, and recognises individuals who have selflessly volunteered their time and efforts by doing vital and extraordinary work in the United Kingdom, and beyond. 

Professor Naqvi founded The British Blockchain Association (The BBA) in 2017. He was the lead author of the UK’s National Blockchain Roadmap (2021), and the Founder and Editor in Chief of The JBBA – Journal of The British Blockchain Association – the world’s first peer-reviewed scientific journal on blockchain, comprising of an Editorial & Review Board which now spans 71 countries. Prof Naqvi is the founder and chair of the world’s first Centre for Evidence-Based Blockchain (CEBB), and founder and chair of BAF – The Blockchain Associations Forum, bringing blockchain associations from 53 countries on one platform. Under his leadership, the BBA established Blockchain International Scientific Conferences (ISCs), BBA Fellowships (FBBA), BBA metaverse headquarters (world’s first non-profit blockchain industry association to establish a metaverse headquarters), and a host of other world-class blockchain and web3 initiatives.

Dr Naqvi is an Honorary Professor of Blockchain at Epoka University. In 2018, he was named a “Think Tank” and a “Blockchain Influencer” by the UK All-Party Parliamentary Group. He was the first person in the world to coin the term “Evidence-Based Blockchain” (EBB) in 2018. Professor Naqvi has given over 600 talks (200+ keynotes) on Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies. He has also become the world’s first person to be awarded a UK National Honour in the field of Blockchain.

Led by some of the world’s most eminent academics, CEBB will devise scientific benchmarks and frameworks to support governments, businesses and policymakers in making evidence-based decisions. As a collective voice on the advancement of Evidence-Based blockchain, the academic “Think Tank” of thought leaders and researchers endeavour to establish internationally agreed standards on education, research and policy-making for blockchain technologies. CEBB will also support organisations in setting up regional and institutional EBB chapters, run by the CEBB Leads. The UK’s influential Treasury Select Committee has announced it will examine the position of virtual currencies in the UK, looking at potential changes to regulation in the space.

Douglas Clerk-Williams, of PaymentCompliance approached the British Blockchain Association for comment.

“It is indeed crucial that public institutions develop an independent assessment of the blockchain and crypto-currency industry, in order to set credible standards and correct possible market imbalances,” Dr Naseem Naqvi, co-found of the British Blockchain Association, said to PaymentsCompliance.

“Decentralised crypto-currencies operate on a public ledger, which works in a peer-to-peer fashion.”

“While there is a degree of pseudonymity in how public blockchains operate, there are certain ‘checkpoints’ where safeguards can be taken to ensure anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing policies are in place through implementation of know your customer,” said Naseem Naqvi of the British Blockchain Association.

The Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) is the latest academic institution to join the British Blockchain Association (BBA).

The BBA is the first UK-wide organisation to encourage and facilitate the adoption of blockchain technology across public, private and third sectors.

With a strong focus on academic engagement the BBA is helping universities such as SUSS to incorporate blockchain education as part of their core curriculums.

Dr. Naseem Naqvi, BBA co-founder said:

“There is an impending need of universities to offer Blockchain education. According to figures, graduates searching for blockchain-related jobs have increased by 223 percent in the past 12 months. The British Blockchain Association (BBA), announced today (Thursday 22nd February) that is had been accepted as a member of the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance (EEA).

The BBA is the first UK-wide organisation to encourage and facilitate the adoption of blockchain technology across public, private and third sectors.

Founders believe the new partnership will have huge implications for both BBA and EEA members.

EEA is the world’s largest open-source blockchain initiative with nearly 300 members including Intel, Deloitte, Ledger, Microsoft and Hewlet Packard
